“If you show the fact you’re different, they’ll come for you and trust me, you do NOT want that.” Nia Kendrick knows there's something wrong with her. She believes herself to be a monster, a murderer. What she truly is though, is far more powerful than she has yet found. She's not even fully human. Nia has gone to the same school in Michigan, with the same kids all her life, but after the death of her boyfriend, she turned into a social outcast. She is afraid to touch anyone, for fear she'll hurt them. Or that was true until Kane Van Guinness took her arm and she found that Kane was just as unusual as she was, in a very different way. She is a cadger, a sponge, the most powerful one who has ever existed. She doesn't know how it works, but her cousin Maxen seems to have answers, ones he only partially shares. Maxen tells Nia about the people of Annwyn, their people, who are fighting to survive because of the cruelty of their leader. Emrys has met Nia before, tried to kill her, but his killing power passed into her body instead. All she wants is to be human, to be the girl she was the year before when life seemed so bright. Nia and Kane have to find a way to stop Emrys, to save not only the people of Annwyn, but themselves and the people they love as well.
